Watch Spiritual Enlightenment During Easter Ceremony in Angeles City in the Philippines
February 15, 2011
The period of Holy Week in the Philippines (either in March or April) is commemorated by the Filipinos in various ways. One of the most unique is that of the Easter Ceremony in Pampanga.
Also known as the Cutud Lenten Rites, it begins on the first day of Holy Week (Monday). It commences with the reading of the Passion of Christ. The reading is performed by the clergy and nuns. This process continues without interruption until Good Friday.
On Good Friday, the highlight commences. Those who are to be flagellated begin by carrying crosses, just like Jesus did during his suffering. Along the way these people are accompanied by guards in simulation of the Roman legions.
After the site is reached, the nails are immersed in alcohol and are nailed to the feet of the individual. In some instances at the Easter Ceremony in Pampanga, the hands and feet are tied by rope. In some cases, someone performs a whipping of the individual before being nailed to the cross.
The length of time that the individual is nailed upon the cross depends on how long he can withstand the pain. On occasion, the person is given some water; this is especially true when the sun goes up and the temperature soars. In other words, the person on the cross can be taken down anytime he asks.
Location
The ritual takes place in several locations, but the one that most tourists flock to is at Barangay San Pedro Cutud (that is in San Fernando and can be reached by jeepney). By the time the Holy Week comes around, it will be filled with people, from the devotees to those who are just plain curious. While the Easter Ceremony in Pampanga may strike some as being morbid, it is actually the way that some people perform penitence and also ask forgiveness from their sins.
The entire Holy Week program actually contains other elements besides the crucifixion / reenactment of the sufferings of Christ. Besides the aforementioned chanting, the devotees also engage in prayers and Bible readings throughout the week. Should you decide to watch this event, it is important that you wear some protection from the heat. Avoiding dehydration is also necessary, so remember to bring some water with you.
The Easter Ceremony in Pampanga is one of the most profound manifestations of the Filipino’s devotion to Christianity, and however one views the activities, the images that they will leave on the mind cannot be denied.
