Thousands celebrate feast of Black Nazarene

STILL reeling from the great devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Sendong in December, Cagayan de Oro City played host to around 10,000 devotees who joined Monday’s procession celebrating the feast of Black Nazarene.
The devotees walked from Barangay Lapasan starting at 4:00 p.m., passing through main thoroughfares in the city and converged at the Nazareno Parish where the image is housed.
Senior Superintendent Gerardo Rosales, chief of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), said the number of this year’s devotees who joined the procession doubled from last year’s, which was only about 5,000.
Rosales said the procession was orderly and no devotees attempted to mob the replica of the Black Nazarene, unlike in Manila where hundreds were injured.
Devotees who waited along the road just threw their handkerchiefs to the Hijos del Nazareno who rode with the image, wiped them and threw them back.
As the procession passed by Agora Road in Barangay Lapasan, a group believed to be members of Seventh Day Adventist stood along the road and tried to stop the people from throwing their handkerchiefs.
The group said devotees should solely believe on their faith and not by wiping their handkerchiefs on the image.
But Rosales said the group’s actions did not destruct the procession.
“Wala ‘yon, it did not destruct or caused any trouble,” he said.
Some 1,000 policemen from the regional headquarter of the Philippine National Police and Cocpo, including soldiers, were deployed to ensure the safety of the people who joined the procession.
Simple refreshments were distributed in the procession to help take away the people’s thirst.
Msgr. Rey Monsanto, Jesus of Nazarene Parish Priest and Archdiocese consultor, said this year’s procession is different and is more festive after Barangay 23 and Southern Philippines College were given permission to conduct silent drill and fireworks as offering to the Black Nazarene.
Msgr. Monsanto said the feast of the Black Nazarene reminds the people, especially those who have been affected by “Sendong”, that God is always with them and does not forsake them despite the calamity that happened.
Msgr. Monsanto said God himself has experienced suffering during his life and that He also understands the sufferings of the people.
The scripture reading of the Mass in celebration of the feast was taken from the reading used for Good Friday.
“We do not know the reason why the calamity happened in the front of God,” Msgr. Monsanto said, though he said God has a reason behind it.
On January 7, Msgr. Monsanto said, the image of the Black Nazarene visited the affected areas in Cagayan de Oro, especially Cala-Cala, Tibasak, Biasong in Barangay Macasandig, Burgos St. and Barangay Consolacion to deliver the message that the Black Nazarene is with them in their sufferings.
“I hope those people who have lost their properties, homes and loved ones will not be discouraged and not to commit suicide. I hope also there will be a stop to the leptospirosis disease,” he said.
The feast of the Black Nazarene is considered as one of the most spectacular religious events in Philippine history.
The life-size image of the Black Nazarene shows a charred Jesus Christ carrying a cross. The original statue has been housed at the Saint John de Baptist Church in Quiapo.
The statue was brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607 aboard a ship. The ship caught fire, burning the image and thus came to be known as the Black Nazarene.
Though the image was burnt, the people decided to preserve and honor it. Since then, miraculous things have been reported to those who touch the image.
A replica of the Black Nazarene’s image, believed to have miraculous powers, was brought to Cagayan de Oro City in 2009.
