Sisterhood pact of two cities signed
December 05, 2010
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez of this city and Talisay City Mayor Eric Zaratan signed a sisterhood agreement on Friday at the Heroes Hall here to facilitate the sharing of good government practices.
Rodriguez, also president of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), said the pact would make official all exchanges of best practices between his city and the Western Visayan City. Talisay City is a 5th class city in the province of Negros Occidental.
“(The sister city agreement) is about the exchange of best practices among others and the desire to have closer relationship with their city,” Rodriguez said.
“Magandang start ito. Halos magkapareho kami ng paniniwala ni Mayor Zaratan dahil seryoso din siya sa kanyang performance governance system (PGS). Gusto din niya agad ma-institutionalize at maging Hall of Fame awardee,” he added.
Aside from sharing best practices, Rodriguez said the sister-city agreement would also boost tourism between the two cities.
Rodriguez also said he was happy that Talisay City chose to follow the footsteps of San Fernando in terms of governance.
Meanwhile, Zaratan said he felt privileged to be San Fernando’s first sister city.
“Syempre lalo kaming ma-i-inspire at mamo-motivate dahil sa dami ng cities na nag-aapply, kami ‘yong binigyan niya (Rodriguez) ng
pagkakataon,” Zaratan said.
Zaratan is also the regional representative of Western Visayas to the LCP.
“We are the only city in our province na naka-PGS din. We chose San Fernando to be our sister city kasi nakita namin na even Naga City and Iloilo City, through PGS, they were able to improve a lot of programs and projects,” Zaratan said.
Zaratan even brought along his city councilors for them to learn why the City Council of San Fernando was awarded as the Most Outstanding City Council in the Philippines.
After their visit here, Zaratan said they will give their best to come up with good programs and projects so he would prove that the sister city agreement was worthy. (Charlene Cayabyab)
