Senator slams Arroyo lawyer for defending Corona

MANILA — Senator Francis Pangilinan on Wednesday slammed former President Gloria Arroyo’s lawyer for defending Chief Justice Renato Corona from calls to inhibit from cases involving the Pampanga lawmaker.
“He sounded more like the lawyer of the Chief Justice than of the Arroyos,” Pangilinan said referring to lawyer Raul Lambino.
In a radio interview this week, Lambino said it was “uncalled for” for Senators Pangilinan and Franklin Drilon to say that Corona should inhibit from cases involving the former President who appointed him to the post.
Lambino called the move highly partisan since both senators are members of the Liberal Party, of which President Benigno Aquino III is chairman.
“This establishes the fact that Arroyo’s lawyer does not want Corona to inhibit and we can assume it is because his client would lose one critical vote should the Chief Justice inhibit himself,” Pangilinan said in a text message.
Pangilinan, a lawyer, said Lambino’s “vociferous” defense of Corona implies that the chief magistrate is in the Arroyo camp “whether (that is) true or not.”
Corona served as Arroyo’s chief of staff while she was a vice president, and was later presidential chief of staff, presidential spokesperson, and also served as executive secretary in an acting capacity.
“All told, the ties are too obvious to ignore or disregard. We urge him to inhibit from the ongoing cases involving the former president,” the senator said.
Drilon earlier called on Corona to inhibit citing his votes on previous Supreme Court decisions involving the former President.
“All his decisions are all for Gloria (Arroyo). His own record shows that he favors Arroyo. Even if Chief Justice Corona’s votes in the 19 cases are based on merit, what is important here is how people perceive him,” Drilon said.
A call to inhibit has also been heard from House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Lorenzo Tañada III, also from the Liberal Party.
Fr. Edu Gariguez of the National Secretariat for Social Action of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has also called for Corona to inhibit himself “out of delicadeza (propriety).”
“Inhibit yourself and let the Supreme Court restore the public’s trust in the integrity of our legal processes to which we have subjected the former President,” Gariguez said Tuesday.
At present, there is only one motion involving Arroyo at the Supreme Court. That motion questions the legality of a Justice department memorandum that allows the Justice secretary to put people under preliminary investigation for crimes on a travel watch list.
Arroyo lawyers say the circular, which was issued by an Arroyo-era Justice secretary, violates the constitutional right to travel.
The SC ruled against compelling Arroyo’s doctors to testify at oral arguments on that motion.
The government wanted the doctors to testify on Arroyo’s medical condition since that was the basis for the former President’s request to leave the country while on the travel watch list.(Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
