Security up for Arroyo’s transfer to state-run hospital

MANILA — Government authorities have set up all security measures for the scheduled transfer of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) today, Friday.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, however, refused to divulge details whether now Pampanga Representative Arroyo will be brought to the government facility on a special van accompanied by a security convoy or flown by a helicopter.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said President Benigno Aquino III has directed Robredo to make all necessary preparations for the safe and smooth transfer of the Pampanga representative.
Members of the media will be allowed to follow Arroyo’s convoy if she will be transported by land. But authorities earlier said they will be strict about allowing vehicles to join in the former President’s convoy.
During a Palace briefing on Thursday, Robredo said Arroyo will not be handcuffed during the trip to the VMMC because of her medical condition.
Arroyo, who was charged of electoral sabotage for her alleged involvement in the rigging of the 2007 senatorial election results, has been under hospital arrest since November 18.
Lacierda said a media briefing will be held on Friday at the lobby of VMMC, adding that he has yet to discuss with the President plans to visit Arroyo in the hospital.
Malacañang also welcomed a Pulse Asia survey showing that 69 percent of Filipinos do not want to see Arroyo leave because of the cases pending against her while 19 percent want otherwise.
“Well, based on those numbers, we certainly welcome the sentiment of the Filipino people here that they are one with the President in the desire to see accountability occur in this administration on the past excesses of the Arroyo administration,” he said.
He reiterated that the administration is not being vindictive against Arroyo. She is even provided with due process.
“Our program of accountability, our program of justice will give former President Arroyo her day in court.”
Lacierda also believed that Arroyo’s lawyer Raul Lambino is appealing to the wrong audience when he flew to Europe to seek international support for the former President.
“He should appeal to the Filipino people for support if he can seek some support from the Filipino people. What is important here are the sentiments of the Filipino people rather than international audience,” he said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
