Sandigan mum on Arroyo’s possible arrest
A SANDIGANBAYAN official withheld comment regarding the possibility of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo being arrested next week for entering into the controversial national broadband network deal in 2007.
This developed after the anti-graft court said its fourth division handling the three graft charges against Arroyo was given 10 days to determine probable cause to issue a warrant of arrest.
The window period will end on January 13.
Earlier in the day, the Sandiganbayan raffled off the cases to the division chaired by Justice Gregory Ong, who will be joined by Justices Jose Hernandez and Maria Cristina Cornejo.
“To ensure that all pronouncements will be accurate, Justice (Gregory) Ong wants all queries about the GMA (Arroyo) cases to be raised before his staff or clerk of court because they are in constant touch with him and can thus readily verify matters,” Sandiganbayan Executive Clerk of Court Renato Bocar told Sun.Star.
Arroyo is currently detained at a hospital suite in the Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) after she was accused of rigging the results of the 2007 senatorial elections, particularly in vote-rich Maguindanao.
Besides Arroyo, graft charges were slapped on her husband Jose Miguel, former Transportation secretary Leandro Mendoza and former elections chief Benjamin Abalos, who is likewise held for poll sabotage at the Southern Police District headquarters in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.
Graft charges are bailable but Arroyo and Abalos will still be under detention because they have been earlier indicted for a non-bailable offense.
At present, government agencies in the Philippines do not have a consolidated network.
The deal with Chinese telecommunications firm ZTE Corp. in April 2007 could have done this objective but the project was cancelled by Arroyo six months later due to allegations of illegal kickbacks and commissions.
The Office of the Ombudsman, which filed the graft case last week, included Arroyo in the charge sheet after she reportedly received “directly or indirectly, any gift, gratuity, or favor” so that the deal would push through.
