RETIRE IN CLARK PAMPANGA: CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY OVERVIEW
May 2, 2011
A continuing care retirement community (CCRC) offers residents a full spectrum of care from independent living apartments or villas to assisted living and long-term care all on one campus. Many also offer short-term rehab services and specialized Alzheimer’s care. A CCRC offers residents peace of mind in knowing that whatever level of care they may need in the future, it is available to them. These communities are also referred to as retirement villages.
Residents usually move to a CCRC when they are still somewhat active and independent. They are then able to take advantage of all of the lifestyle programs a CCRC offers including social, recreational and educational activities. Many CCRCs also have travel clubs, garden clubs and other organizations in which residents can participate. Health and wellness programs are usually available as well.
As residents begin to age and need more care and assistance, they move through the levels of care the CCRC offers without having to shop for care with each change in health condition. They know the community and the staff and that makes the transitions easier.
HOW THEY ARE PAID
Understanding the contracts, fees and payment structure for a CCRC can be very confusing. The most common payment type is private funds. Some CCRCs also require a non-refundable entrance fee or an equity payment, while others don’t require these fees or make them refundable. Some communities accept Medicaid in their assisted living (depending upon the state) and in their long-term care, yet others won’t. Most CCRCs have a short-term rehab program that is Medicare certified. See our Tips and Checklists for a better understanding of what to look for and what to ask a CCRC with regard to payment and fees.
HOW THEY ARE REGULATED
Each level of care for a CRCC is regulated with the exception of the independent living. The state regulates assisted living, and long-term care is regulated at both the state and federal levels. The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC) also accredits CCRCs, but it is optional to participate and not a required accreditation.
