Relocation of riverside residents in Sagay underway

SECOND District Representative Alfredo Marañon III said the residents along the Himoga-an River will be relocated after the recent flood that threatened their lives.
He said the flood caused by the recent heavy rains in northern Negros forced thousands of families living along Himoga-an River to evacuate.
He said it was just fortunate that there was no fatality due to the timely evacuation undertaken by the local government aided by the police and the military.
“It is very dangerous for them to continue residing in the area. We will have to relocate them,” Marañon told reporters here.
Heavy rains caused floodwater to rise as high as waist deep, rendering the Sagay national highway and the bridge in Barangay Fabrica impassable, resulting in numerous vehicles and passengers stranded for half a day.
Marañon also said, with the release of the budget by the National Government, the damaged roads in the second district will be repaired before this year ends.
He also said the diversion road going to Sagay City is also underway this year.
The diversion road will start from Hacienda Maya, Barangay Cabahug, Cadiz City. This will include construction of the new road going to Sagay City and the construction of a new bridge, as the existing bridge is already dilapidated.
Meanwhile, Marañon, who is also House committee chairman on health, is among the congressmen who met with PhilHealth president Dr. Eduardo Banzon at the Nature’s Restaurant in Talisay City, Friday.
Marañon said it is high time that there is an increase in PhilHealth premium, which will translate to an increase in the health insurance coverage.
He said the misunderstanding regarding the premium hike came about because PhilHealth failed to disseminate the fact the National Government has done away with its subsidy.
He added that his committee is also working for the passage of the Universal Health Card, which will be introduced throughout the country. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
