Prosecution panel for Corona’s impeach trial almost complete

ONLY one slot in the 11-man prosecution panel is yet to be filled up by the House of Representatives in preparation for the impeachment trial against Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The panel will be composed of House justice committee chairman Niel Tupas Jr. (Iloilo), Deputy Speakers Lorenzo Tañada (Quezon) and Raul Daza (Northern Samar), Deputy Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas (Ilocos Norte), and Cavite Representative Elpidio Barzaga Jr.
Joining them are Representatives Joseph Emilio Abaya (Cavite), Giorgidi Aggabao (Isabela), Kaka Bag-ao (Akbayan party-list), Neri Colmenares (Bayan Muna party-list), and Reynaldo Umali (Mindoro Oriental).
Deputy Majority Leader Romero Frederico Quimbo (Marikina) was earlier elected to be part of the prosecution panel but was replaced by Abaya.
“I was originally designated as a prosecutor-spokesperson. Unfortunately, the rules of the Senate impeachment court disallow a prosecutor from talking to the media. That would effectively prevent me from acting as the spokesperson which is my main assignment thus I had to give up being a prosecutor to be the spokesperson,” Quimbo said in a text message.
Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, son of Senator Edgardo Angara, and Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac) party-list Representative Sherwin Tugna were, meanwhile, elected as alternate prosecutors.
Some of the prosecutors named were also the ones elected to defend the impeachment case against former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.
Early this week, the House of Representatives in a majority caucus decided to impeach Corona, an appointee of former President and Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Belmonte said the prosecution panel will be provided with a P5-million budget by the House leadership.
“We will also make a budget available for them so that they can carry out their job,” the House Speaker, who was part of the prosecution panel during the impeachment trial against former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, said.
