Poll results on Arroyo ‘show Filipinos still trust Aquino’
MALACANANG on Wednesday welcomed the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing that majority of Filipinos said the Aquino administration has been “fair” in its treatment of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Of the 1,200 respondents, 69 percent answered “only fair” when asked the question: “What is your opinion about the administration’s treatment of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo regarding the cases that she is facing?”
The respondents were given three choices: Too harsh, too lenient, and only fair.
Only 17 percent answered too harsh, while 13 percent said too lenient.
“Number one, kahit ano pa ang sinsasabi ng mga taong bumabatikos kay Pangulong Aquino, naniniwala pa rin po ang taumbayan sa kanyang programa, sa kanyang prinsipyo. He started with a bang, he is ending with a bang,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said when asked to comment on the survey results.
“The people still continue to believe, highly believe, in the President. So it’s something that we are very proud of. It is something that we are very thankful to the Filipino people in their continuing trust and confidence with the President,” he added.
The survey was conducted from December 3 to 7 after former President Arroyo was placed under hospital arrest for electoral sabotage charges.
During the same briefing, Lacierda dismissed comments that said the President was politicking when he named some of the possible senatorial candidates for the Liberal Party in the 2013 elections.
“The mere statement of the President does not mean that we are politicking,” Lacierda said.
Aquino, in a television interview Tuesday, said he wanted defeated senatorial candidates Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, Ruffy Biazon, Danny Lim, and incumbent Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to be included in the administration ticket in 2013.
Lacierda said he sees nothing wrong with Aquino’s early pronouncement of his senatorial bets since the personalities he mentioned “were previously involved or previously were with him during the presidential campaign who ran as senators.”
“So it’s not surprising that he will echo the same personalities he, whom he believes in, and who may believe will advance further the cause of reform,” he said.
While Biazon and Lim both hold positions in the Bureau of Customs, the National Government’s second-largest revenue source, the President would like to see them in Senate to help advance his legislative agenda.
“He would like to see men who believe in his agenda, in his advocacy to be part of the Senate because we have to advance the legislative agenda of the President. Did this part of institutionalizing the reforms that we have been doing and one way institutionalizing the reforms is to make them become laws. So we need legislators, senators who will advance and institutionalize the reforms that the President has been doing,” the Palace spokesman said.
He maintained that the President remains firm and focused on improving the economy and his agenda of eradicating poverty and curbing graft and corruption and not on politics.
In his interview, President Aquino also mentioned that Budget Secretary Florencio Abad was the only Cabinet official who expressed interest to be part of the LP slate but he later apparently changed his mind.
Abad was the campaign manager of Aquino during the 2007 senatorial elections and the 2010 presidential polls.
The President said the LP slate will also include candidates from other coalition partners and allied groups but not from the party of Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Aquino cited “difficulty and disagreement” as reasons.
Lacierda dismissed that the President’s statement would affect the working relationship of Aquino and Binay.
“The Vice President is part of the official team. We all know that the Vice President does not belong to the same party that the President belongs to. So right now we are in a stage where we need to further the reforms of government, and it so happens that the Vice President also believes in the reforms advanced by the President. So there’s no problem and there’s no reason why there should be a falling out,” he said.
“It is understandable that the Vice President has its own political party and he would like also to advance his senatorial slate and that’s something that is a political reality. And that’s what the President mentioned,” he added. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
