No shortlist for Chief Justice’s replacement yet

NO SHORTLIST has yet been made regarding possible replacements for Chief Justice Renato Corona, a Palace official said on Tuesday.
“This is merely an eventuality but he has asked his legal advisers to look into names for possible Chief Justice. But there is no shortlist yet,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said on Tuesday.

Lacierda made these remarks after the Chief Executive confirmed in an ABS-CBN interview that he has asked his legal team to come up with names of those who will be considered as replacement for Corona, who will be facing impeachment trial at the Senate by January.
Asked if the President intends to submit the shortlist to the Judicial and Bar Council, which recommends nominees to the judiciary, Lacierda said “we don’t know yet what the President intends to do with that list if ever one is formed.”
Since the President is not a lawyer, he needs the advice of his legal team on who will best fit to serve as chief justice, he said, adding that Aquino is looking for someone like Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Sereno is Aquino’s first appointee to the Supreme Court.
“He needs someone who are in the likes of (Maria Lourdes) Sereno. Just to let you know, Sereno was not known to the President. He will look into their qualifications and see if there are some, if there are people who are worthy to be members of the Supreme Court, making sure that there are men and women of probity, integrity and independence,” the Palace official said.
One of the top contenders for the Chief Justice post is Associate Justice Antonio Carpio but President Aquino refused to comment about it when he was asked.
Asked if the Palace sees the Supreme Court as its biggest challenge in the coming year, Lacierda answered, “we need judicial reform.”
“We need an independent Supreme Court and that’s what we’ve been fighting for. We do not want a compliant Supreme Court. We want a Supreme Court that truly heeds the mandate of the people, who [is] also accountable; that’s something that we have always been emphasizing. Of the three branches, the Supreme Court is the unelected portion and we believe that they should also remember their pledge of loyalty to the Filipino people,” he said.
At the same time, the spokesperson also defended the President’s statement, saying that there is nothing wrong with move.
The move is just part of a “contingency,” if ever Corona will be replaced, Lacierda said.
“There’s no legal issue because we’re just preparing for a contingency. This is just a contingency,” Lacierda said.
Corona earlier asked the Senate to dismiss the impeachment complaint against him for constitutional infirmities. The House of Representatives impeached Corona for betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, and graft and corruption. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
