Nepomuceno-owned farms ‘obeying environmental laws’
December 5, 2010
ANGELES CITY — Councilor Bryan Nepomuceno, inhibiting himself during a City Council hearing Friday on the piggeries issue, represented his family and answered allegations that their farms have contributed to air pollution in the city.
In defense of his family and their business, Nepomuceno told members of the City Council that their farms have been instituting measures on proper solid waste management, aside from the fact that they have complete documents and permits to run their business.
“I have inhibited myself from the proceedings to remove any doubts and to present answers to allegations that we are violating environmental laws in running our poultry farms,” Nepomuceno said in an interview.
“We have the required permits and we have abided by the standards set by the environment department and satisfied their conditions,” he added.
Nepomuceno said the City Assessor’s Office has also classified the land their poultry farms are standing on as agricultural lots.
Nepomuceno, however, said his family is not just concerned about their business, but also about the welfare of the people who live near the said farms.
“That is why we have installed measures and various infrastructures in our farms to ensure proper waste management,” he said.
Nepomuceno said even though the Environmental Management Bureau has earlier given them a notice of violation on certain Environmental Compliance Certificate standards, their poultry farms have already been cleared of the said violations.
“We have complied with the said standards, and we have been cleared of the violation,” he said.
“We can see during our presentation that our farms are well-maintained, and we have been applying new technologies to further reduce foul odor and the proliferation of flies,” he added.
Nepomuceno also said that the foul odor and proliferation of flies, as assailed by Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement chairman Perto Cruz, cannot be attributed solely to farms located in Cutcut.
“In fact, our farms there have not been operational for the past two days,” he said.
Meanwhile, chair on environment Councilor Edu Pamintuan said the City Council will study all angles even as they are set to come up with a committee report on Tuesday.
An ocular inspection of all hog farms has been set for Monday.
“If found that these farms have violated environmental laws, the council will advise the city mayor to cancel their permits,” he said. (Ria de Fiesta)
