BACOLOD Mayor Evelio Leonardia was invited to the birthday celebration of the Emperor of Japan at the residence of Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura recently at Cambridge Circle, North Forbes Park, Makati City.
Emperor Akihito turned 77. He formally acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne in November of 1990, ushering in the era known as the Heisei Period in Japan. He and his Empress Michiko have exerted efforts to bring the Imperial Family closer to the Japanese people, and have made official visits to 18 countries as well.
In Japan, to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday, a public ceremony takes place at the Imperial Palace – normally off-limits to the public.
The palace gates are open and the Imperial Family appears on a palace balcony to acknowledge the greetings of the crowd who wave tiny Japanese flags. Only on this occasion can the public enter the inner grounds of the Imperial Palace.
