Local chief executives, sanggunian members commit to TB-free Central Luzon
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Oct 29 (PIA) — Several local chief executives and sanggunian members from Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales pledged their support toward Department of Health (DOH)-3 vision for a tuberculosis (TB)-free Central Luzon.
In his presentation during the concluded summit billed “Bayanihan sa TB, TB-free Central Luzon” in Clark Freeport, Tarlac Governor Victor Yap said, “Some of my province’s best practices in preventing the rapid spread include increasing the budget for health, incorporating of the TB plan into the Provincial/Municipal Investment Plan for Health, increasing local government-sponsored enrollment of indigents, DOH certification and PhilHealth accreditation of all Directly Observed Treatment Short (DOTS) facilities, strengthening of TB advocacy efforts in the grassroots, capacitating Barangay Health Workers and recognizing their achievements by giving them incentives.”
For her part, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda said that her administration’s efforts in the fight against TB include, “Hiring nurses to find patients so they can undergo medication.”
In a message, DOH-Center for Health Development 3 (CHD 3) Chief Leonita Gorgolon said local governments can take part in the goal to lessen TB cases through “Be involved.”
“Be involved is an acronym that stands for Both public and private working together, Engage all sectors, Implement DOTS, No to Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), Validate through Direct sputum smear microscopy (DSSM) /culture, Organize teams to do advocacy to fight TB, Lessen out of pocket expenses through health care financing, Valuable participation of partners and community, Empower every member of the community, and Develop a sense of responsibility for your health and for the health of your loved ones,” Gorgolon explained.
These initiatives are in line with the eight National TB Program (NTP) strategies which are localizing implementation of TB control; monitoring health system performance; engaging all health care providers (public and private); promoting positive behaviors of communities; addressing MDR-TB, TB-HIV and needs of vulnerable population; regulating and making quality TB diagnostic tests and drugs; certifying and accrediting TB care providers; and securing adequate funding and improving allocation and efficiency of fund utilization.
“TB is curable and preventable. In the year 2011, all forms of TB totaled 14, 846 cases. From these, 11 percent completed the treatment, 77 percent were cured, while four percent were defaulted and three percent died,” Gorgolon said.
Gorgolon added that DOH-CHD 3 will continue scaling-up to get “extra pair of hands” to deliver and broaden access to reach more, intensify case-finding on prioritized groups and maintain quality throughout. (WLB/CLJD-PIA 3)
