LAST TWO MINNUTES

December 03, 2010

ELDEST of eight children with 3 siblings deceased, Alberto “Berting” F. Liscano was born to Domingo Liscano of Sta. Rita, Pampanga and Francesca, also of Pampanga, a housewife. In 1958, his dad and the family were invited to Davao City and worked with the Davao Traders Incorporated by the late Tita Liling Victorio of Mindanao Trading who is a cabalen.

Berting enrolled at the Panabo Elementary and for his first two years in high school, at the Mindanao Colleges, Panabo Branch. Despite the absence of the 3 point shot rule, Berting developed his outside shots almost perfect that he was then known as the orginal long tom artist. Due to his height and shooting powers, the late Engr. Pedro Torres invited him to play with the Mindanao Colleges’ Main High School Seacubs, who played alongside with my brother, Skipper City Councilor Melchor V. Quitain, Jimmy Ventosa, Dodong Tamayo and Arthur Carbonilla, Ben Duque, and Eddy Te, among others. They were perennial champions in the PRISAA and other school league, and exchanged crowns with Rizal Memorial Colleges High School Bullpups, led by the legendary brothers, Bayani and Taba Espino.

After high school graduation, he continued playing with the UM Collegiate Men’s Basketball Team and continued likewise to dominate the local and regional PRISAA leagues. His collegiate team mates were DSHF Director Frank Yu, Jr., the late Boy Odi, Dolfo Diligero, and Romy Gutierrez. He had the privilege of playing against the legendary The Big J then with the UE Red Warriors during the National Intercollegiate Championship in Iloilo coached by the Dean of Coaches, Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan.

It was during this tournament where school Manila teams invited him to play big time basketball in Manila, but he was then still young and so much attached to his family that he opted to come home and accepted the offer of the late Mr. Ben Sendaña, manager of GSIS with the late Tura Sumalinog to play with the GSIS commercial basketball team. This began the exodus of all UM Collegiate players to the GSIS which included Douglas “Bulldog” Solis, Nonoy Deluao, Boy Odi, the Diligero brothers, Eddie Te, the late Paquito Torres, Dolfo Bandigan, and Lito Singson who had a short UAAP stint with the FEU Tamaraws under the helm of the late Coach Dodong Estardo. The rivalry of the then GSIS team and the PGEA was the local Toyota-Crispa intense and fierce rivalry. The PGEA was led by the Espino brothers, Bayani and Taba, Bobby Alojipan, George Cabatingan, Pidio Jumalon, Boy Afable, Bayani Pascual, Luis Barro, Timing Zabate with Coach Max Abrina calling the shots.

Berting is married to Lolita Salanal of Sta. Cruz, Manila with whom they have 3 children. His eldest Louie, a team mate of hometown hero Jomer Rubi who also played in college with Holy Cross of Davao and the Perpetual Help of Las Piñas, and for some time played in the NCAA. Louie, who is married, is currently managing the GSIS canteen. Berting idolizes former UST Yco Superstar the late Sonny Reyes and a team mate, another hometown hero, Valentino Rosabal, and the legendary Bill Russel of the Boston Celtics. The Long Tom Artist of Pampanga presently works at the City Engineer’s Office and once officiated as basketball referee in the old BAP. To you Berting, during your long stay here in Davao, which you have considered your second home, continue to share your basketball talents to young people who dream someday also to become superstars in their own right.
