Kangaroo meat touted as diet food
Are kangaroos a modern plague, overrunning Australia in numbers ten times greater than when Captain James Cook first weighed anchor there, or are they an endangered species whose native habitat is being destroyed, destined for certain extinction*? Opinions differ strongly in Australia and elsewhere, but the kangaroo industry is trying to improve its image by promoting the benefits of kangaroo meat for calorie counters.
Just as protesters have targeted Adidas and other companies that use kangaroo leather, some environmentalists have taken on Australia’s kangaroo meat exports to European and other markets. To fight back, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation in Australia has funded a strategic plan to improve the image of kangaroo meat by publicizing its health benefits: low fat (under 2%), most of which is polyunsaturated, and only 98 calories per 100 gram (3.5 ounce) serving.
You may be seeing “australus” steaks on the menu in the near future. This is the name that Australian culinary trade magazine Food Companion International chose as its suggestion for renaming kangaroo meat.
The editors felt that kangaroo meat needed an equivalent to pork, beef, and mutton in order to gain popularity. Otherwise, the cute image of kangaroos makes people reluctant to eat the meat. More than 2,700 people from around the world submitted suggestions.
