Justice office asked to reject Ampatuan bid to be witness

RELATIVES of slain journalists in the Maguindanao massacre paid a courtesy call on Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Monday, two years after the gruesome incident took place.
The group, represented by lawyer Harry Roque, wants the government to reject an offer by former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) governor Zaldy Ampatuan — who is one of the accused in the massacre — to become state witness in the poll sabotage case of ex-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The offer is “morally reprehensible,” the group said in a three-page letter addressed to de Lima.
During the same visit, the group also met lawyer Martin Menes, director of the DOJ Witness Protection Program.
Once considered a government witness, Zaldy will enjoy preferential treatment, the letter said.
Currently detained at Camp Bagong Diwa, Zaldy is among those principally accused in the killing of 57 persons, including some 30 journalists.
Other respondents charged for the carnage are his father, former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., and brother Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Jr.
The group also said that Zaldy has no personal knowledge about the supposed poll fraud for which Arroyo was charged with, and his testimony is not indispensable to the prosecution.
“All he can say are mere generalities of little evidentiary value. In the first place, all he has presented is an unsigned statement that links the former President to cheating in Maguindanao during the 2004 presidential election and 2007 senatorial elections,” the group said.
Roque also said that families of massacre victims are also set to file a P15-million civil suit against Arroyo for allegedly tolerating Ampatuan clan’s militia group during her administration.
“If not for Mrs. Arroyo, the Ampatuan clan would not be able to build up such army that he claimed to have terrorized those who had been living in Maguindanao,” he said. (ECV/Sunnex)
