“SAKIT kaayo ang Pasko (My Christmas is miserable).”
Thus said PO3 Arman Enriquez, who allegedly shot and killed Allan Bolo, the laborer who held captive three boys and hacked one of them in Toledo City last Thursday.
After shooting Bolo, the 38-year-old policeman said he prayed for forgiveness.
“Luoy baya sad kay naa baya siya’y pamilya (I feel sorry for him and his family),” he said in a phone interview. “Pero wa ko’y mahimo kay bayolente naman siya (But I had no choice because he was already violent).”
But he said it was not the first time he had killed a person.
In 2007, he had a gunfight with four gang members during a fiesta in Barangay San Juan in Toledo City. He responded alone.
After one member of the gang hit him in the stomach, he shot back at the person and killed him. He said he collapsed and did not regain consciousness until he was already in the hospital. After he learned the man who shot him died, he felt bothered.
“Pirme ko dugay katulog (I had trouble sleeping),” he said in a phone interview. “Pero naanad ra ko (Eventually I overcame my uneasiness).”
Three years later, he shot and killed a wanted person in Balamban town after the latter tried to shoot his team.
Enriquez snagged the third place in the PNP Proficiency Shootfest last October. His fellow officer SPO1 Peter Cuanso Jr. got the first place, while Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador grabbed fourth place.
In the hostage drama in Sitio Danawon, Enriquez said he introduced himself as a radio reporter and negotiated with Bolo.
“Nagda kog ball pen ug papel ato para ilista iyang mga problema (I brought a pen and a sheet of paper to jot down all his problems),” he said.
The hostage drama started at 5:30 a.m. when Bolo lured the boys, who are cousins, inside his bamboo house by offering them cassava. They accepted Bolo’s offer, because they knew him.
Bolo, 31, sang a Christmas song to the boys, but neighbors noticed that he had a bolo with him. He later told his neighbors that he was holding the boys hostage and would not release them until his wife, Arlene, returned to him.
He tied the two brothers to his side with a rope while he hoisted their cousin up on his shoulders.
He threatened to kill the boys at 10 a.m. unless his demands were granted. He demanded four hand grenades, two high-powered Armalites, and a .45 pistol.
Bolo told the police there was no solution to his problem and he would die anyway.
Comendador, who went to the sitio, sent a team from the Special Reaction Unit (SRU).
Enriquez, who was in civilian clothes, positioned himself outside the window and was near Bolo during the negotiation.
He said that while he was giving an M16 rifle to Bolo, a boy wriggled free from the man’s side and tried to run. When Bolo was about to hack the boy, Enriquez said he quickly drew out his .45 service pistol using his right hand and shot Bolo in the chest.
The slug went through and exited at Bolo’s back, Enriquez said. The boy was rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City after he was hit in his right arm.
Another policeman ran inside to grab the bolo. Bolo resisted, but the policeman managed to get the weapon.
Two to three minutes later, Bolo died. But the police still rushed him to the hospital, where the doctor officially declared him dead.
In his 15 years of service, Enriquez said he always practice shooting three to four times a week. If he has extra money, he would go to the firing range every day.
“Di gyod ta mokompiyansa…kahibawo sad gyod ta mo-shoot back kon ang kinabuhi nato naa sa peligro (I should not be overconfident…I should know to shoot back when my life is in danger),” said Enriquez, who said he learned his lesson after his near-death experience in 2007.
