Easter in the Philippines: ‘A celebration of Faith’
February 15, 2011
Easter is the greatest holiday in Christian Calendar, marking the rebirth of Jesus Christ and the renewal of Christian Faith… Filipinos go to church together as soon as sunrise hits on Easter Sunday, and celebrate the life, death and resurection of the savior… It’s also a magical time for children to enjoy chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks, and jellybean-filled Easter eggs….
What a fun Easter activity, Easter egg hunting is! It all begins with purchasing eggs at the store. The number of eggs to purchase depends on how many kids will be Easter egg hunting.
Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given to celebrate the Easter holiday or springtime. The egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in Pagan celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the rebirth. The oldest tradition is to use dyed or painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jellybeans. These eggs are often hidden, allegedly by the Easter Bunny, for good children to find on Easter morning. Otherwise, they are generally put in a basket filled with real or artificial straw to resemble a bird’s nest.
Being a God-observing country, Philippines observe Lenten season religiously. This will start on Ash Wednesday that paternized the lunar calendar of Romans to be followed by Palm Sunday, then what we call THE HOLY WEEK, with Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday, and will end on Easter Sunday. It was said that we celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon or the first vernal equinox(day and night sharing equal length). This was agreed upon by the church leaders of Nicea(325 A.D.), thus, this day can be either from March 22nd till April25th.
“If you want to wow your family with extra special Easter eggs, this is the recipe for you! These are peanut butter and coconut cream eggs dipped in chocolate. They are both delicious and beautiful!”
