Cookware, clothes needed in Oro, Iligan

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — As Tropical Storm Sendong’s death count reached almost 1,300 as of Thursday, relief goods for victims in Northern Mindanao continued to pour in from various groups.
However, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda said what the thousands of affected residents badly need are cookware and clothes.
“I was told that the food supply is sufficient as of now. What they need more are cookware and clothes,” Pineda said.
Her statement came after she sent a four-man team to the cities of Iligan and Cagayan De Oro earlier this week to assess the situation in the two hardest-hit areas. Former Department of Agriculture official Roy Imperial, adviser-consultant of the governor, led the team.
The governor said she had spoken with Cagayan De Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano over the phone and was told about the situation in his city and nearby Iligan.
Tens of thousands are jammed in crowded evacuation centers in Iligan and Cagayan De Oro as the New Year approaches.
Pineda said she had asked her people to purchase cookware and underclothes.
“They will send the goods to Northern Mindanao anytime when they are ready,” she said.
Board Member Cris Garbo, chairman of committee on appropriations, said the Provincial Board approved a financial assistance amounting to P1.5 million.
The Capitol workers gave a total of P500,000, while job order workers also contributed to the donation of the Provincial Government, the Provincial Information Office (PIO) said.
The PIO said the Philippine Army based in Arayat and the Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial command also donated funds.
Pineda said they intend to fund the permanent relocation sites for victims of “Sendong”.
“The situation is still not normal in Northern Mindanao and the making of houses for those displaced locals is not yet the major concern. Ensuring the safety and welfare of affected people and search for the missing hundreds are still the priority,” Pineda stressed.
The first-term governor said she wants to “give back the generosity and care” of those when helped Pampanga when it was flooded before.
