Houseplants You Can’t Kill
If only that were true. Live plants live a precarious life in many of our homes. Low light. Low humidity. Water when we remember. It’s no wonder plants prefer roughing it outdoors. These 5 plants can take plenty of abuse and keep on thriving.

Ramps (Wild Leeks) A Culinary Up and Comer
I happened to be watching Grill It! with Bobby Flay, while peddling at the gym the other morning, and his guest chef, Jeremy Stanton, had brought items he had foraged. Some of his ingredients, like ramps (wild leeks), are becoming so popular they’re getting as pricy as truffles. I love ramps. They have an onion-like aroma, but they taste like a subtle garlic.
Some of his other ingredients, like knot weed, garlic mustard and nettles, made me chuckle. Stanton figured that the best chance of getting rid of noxious weeds is turning them into irresistible dishes. You can try his Grilled Chicken Breast with Foraged Vegetables and Nettle Pesto recipes. And unless you live in an area known for its ramps, like Richwood, VA where they’ve had a ramps festival for over 70 years, you might want to try growing some ramps of your own.
Community and School Gardens
One of the few nice things about tough times is that it woos many people into the garden. People who never grew so much as a pansy are now tomato growing obsessives. And lucky school kids are being dragged out there with them.
If you’ve been considering starting a garden in your community, whether to help feed people, to reclaim a vacant lot or to get the kids involved, there is a lot of great advice on the web to get you started. The American Community Gardening Association has a web site overflowing with charts and resources or you can begin with my boiled down checklist for getting a community garden organized. If you’ve been part of a community or school garden, we’d appreciate whatever tips you’d care to pass along. I’m collecting them here, so they’ll be easy to find.
Late Blight, The Sequel
Two years ago, a large portion of the east coast saw late blight decimate their tomato and potato plants. Most of us dodged that bullet last years, but late blight is once again rearing its ugly head. There have been confirmed cases of late blight reported in both Connecticut (tomatoes and potatoes) and Wisconsin (potatoes).
Late blight is a disease that affects mainly tomatoes and potatoes. Once it takes hold, the spores spread rapidly and great distances. Cool, wet weather encourages the development of the disease. There is no cure for late blight, but there are a few steps you can take to possibly prevent late blight in your garden.
Have You Thinned Your Vegetables?
I think we all agree some garden work is tedious – but necessary. I would put thinning in that category. There’s the frustrating way that self-seeding flowers drop their seeds everywhere but where you want them. Verbena bonariensis is in just about every garden I visit – and it’s beautiful – but the second year always brings a virtual carpet of seedlings. Portulaca pops up in some of the oddest places, like the gutter that seriously needs cleaning. We know these plants will grow and look better if we thin out the plants to a reasonable spacing. With flowers, this can be done anytime during the growing season. Not so with vegetables.
Some vegetables, particularly those grown for their roots, like beets, onions and carrots, need space to fill out, even while young. Even some leafy vegetables, like lettuce and spinach, need some elbow room for growth, as well as for good air circulation. To add insult to injury, many of these tiny seedlings don’t transplant well, so it feels like such a waste. Luckily a few are edible and you can assuage your dismay with a fresh salad. So today, as I head out to do my inevitable thinning, I thought I’d remind you not to let your vegetable plants get too large, before you thin them out. To get you started, here’s a list of vegetables that need thinning and some spacing guidelines.
