Clark Pampanga Philippines: Fact Sheet: Planting Herbs
Every garden needs a herb patch. But in Jerry’s Brisbane garden growing traditional annual herbs can be challenging, so he’s opted for some perennial favourites and some growing techniques that will help the plants survive.
Gathering herbs should always be easy, simple and quick. For example most herbs like a combination of some shade and sun. Jerry has also raised his herb bed to help with drainage because most herbs like moisture but dislike soggy soil.
Jerry has selected lemon grass Cymbopogon citratus, which he has planted in blocks to create some shade and shelter for more delicate plants; a rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis, soon to be in full sun, and society garlic Tulbaghia violacea ‘Variegata’, with its edible foliage and flowers. He has also planted some wormwood, or Artemisia absinthium, good for repelling cupboard moths, and in the shade is galangal Kaempferia galanga. It’s used in Asian cookery, like ginger Zingiber officinale, but this plant is also said to be an aphrodisiac. Galangal, ginger and cardamon are all part of the ginger family and they’re easily grown in a frost free climate. True cardamom Elettaria cardamomum var. cardamomum, as opposed to the more widely grown false cardamon, set seeds for use in curries, and the leaves can flavour fish.
Traditional cold climate herbs enjoy Brisbane’s winter. Jerry has planted three varieties of mint, and French lavender Lavandula dentata. For a hot Brisbane summer he’s planted the prettily variegated four seasons herb and rose geranium Pelargonium graveolens ‘Variegata’.
Jerry also has a curry leaf Helichrysum italicum growing, soaking up the sun. It’s slightly less common than the ordinary curry leaf which is great for soups and stews. Another of Jerry’s favourites is the Kaffir lime Citrus hystrix, which is ideal for Asian salads and curries, and underneath this he has planted an Aloe vera cutting, ideal for wounds and for healing sunburn.
When it comes to sowing seeds, herbs, such as parsley and garlic chives, seem to germinate better when sown in a box and given a little shade for the first three weeks. The seed responds well to an even temperature, humidity and sunlight.
Some tips for growing herbs in the sub tropics include providing excellent drainage that can be attained by plunging potted plants in beds. Plunging keeps the neck of the plant dry and reduces the risk of fungal attack.
Another tip is to work grit or sand into the planting hole to improve drainage, or simply use a gravel mulch. All of these reduce the amount of water that collects around the roots.
Jerry is growing a Kaffir lime in a decorative container and in summer the roots can become too hot. To overcome this Jerry has planted the Kaffir lime in a plastic pot, inserted into the container. The gap between the plastic pot and the container has been filled with bark which helps insulate the roots from burning in summer. The foliage can stand the heat, but the roots prefer cooler soil.
Another problem is that Kaffir limes, like other citrus, can be affected by leaf miner. Jerry is growing his lime for the kitchen, so he is going to treat it with a horticultural oil to keep it clean and good for use.
Once you’ve grown herbs you’ll find loads of uses for them around the house. Jerry has got lavender and wormwood to keep his cupboards clear of cupboard moth. There is peppermint scented pelargonium Pelargonium tomentosum, great to put inside a baking dish to impart flavour to a soft sponge cake. And of course lemon grass and ginger – real ginger is firm and pink – so put these together for a really refreshing cup of tea.
For Jerry it’s impossible to beat fresh herbs in cooking….by using fresh herbs people will always notice the flavours and come back for more.
