City engages youth in massive environmental cause
ANGELES CITY – In line with the International Youth Day celebration, the city government here tied up with the Kayanakan Youth Organization and the Mother Earth Foundation, Inc., in initiating a symposium for educating the youth in issues like climate change, environmental preservation and protection.
The event, which had the theme “Greening the Blue”, was spearheaded by the Angeles City Youth and Student Bureau (ACYSB) and was held last August 11, 2012, Saturday, at the SM City Clark Event Center.
According to Fides Miranda, Executive Director of the ACYSB, the theme was anchored around the belief that the preservation and promotion of positive environmental advocacies (green) could take over any kind of sorrow or gloom (blue) brought about by man’s irresponsible acts.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, who graced the event, told the youth that the city government needs their help in implementing its programs and projects that tackle environmental protection and preservation.
“Our irresponsible and indiscriminate throwing of garbage in the city has cost us a lot of resources over the past year, which is why I wish to extend an invitation to all of you to join us all in our next and other succeeding river clean-up drives and tree planting activities,” the mayor said.
Pamintuan also thanked and lauded the efforts of Mother Earth Foundation for supporting the local government in its aim to be the first zero-waste city in the country.
Froilan Grate, president of the Mother Earth and guest speaker for the symposium, reminded the youth of their responsibility for the environment as they will “inherit” the planet in the next generation.
Grate also elaborated on 10 simple things what the youth can do to further protect the environment.
These include not using plastic materials like straws, using a glass of water when brushing the teeth and unplugging all electrical devices when not in use.
The symposium ended with youth representatives led by Francis “Bing” Boyce of Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition taking an oath of commitment to engage them in promoting environmental awareness, and supporting the local government in its advocacies on waste segregation and tree-planting.
