Cities league to donate P250,000 to Sendong-hit areas
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) will be donating some P250,000 to at least five areas in Mindanao that were devastated by Tropical Storm Sendong.
LCP president and City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said the fund donation will be divided between five areas identified by the LCP.
“The LCP will be mobilizing its ranks to help the people affected by Tropical Storm Sendong. This assistance is apart from the assistance being mobilized by LCP members on their own respective areas,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez added that the City Government of San Fernando will be donating some P100,000 as assistance for the storm victims.
Rodriguez, who also chairs the Regional Development Council for Central Luzon, said they are also tapping on municipalities, cities and provincial governments to organize their own donation and fund-raising campaigns for the rehabilitation efforts.
“The extent of the damage to life and property is so big that the National Government would need the help of local government units to address this calamity through concerted efforts,” Rodriguez added.
Initial reports showed that the recent typhoon destroyed 87 metric tons (MT) of rice worth P6.1 million mostly in Palawan, and 189 MT of corn worth P4.5 million mostly in Zamboanga del Norte and Northern Mindanao.
Some P4.78 million worth of vegetables, fruits and root crops in Northern Mindanao were also damaged by “Sendong”.
Disaster officials reported Sunday flashfloods triggered by Sendong in the northern Mindanao region have already killed 1,236 people and a thousand more are still missing.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that some 108,798 families (695,195 persons) were affected by the floods in 789 villages, 56 municipalities and eight cities in two Visayas regions, and five Mindanao regions.
The NDRRMC said 64,248 families (327,826 persons) have been served in 46 evacuation centers. The disaster agency has placed the initial damaged to infrastructure at P1.081 billion and P1.936 in agriculture.
