CHD-3 eyes ISO certification
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—To contribute in meeting the present administration’s 16-point agenda, especially on improving the quality of service for all Filipinos, the Department of Health is determined to be certified by the International Organization for Standardization or ISO by 2013.
“Each CHD was given a time frame of 18 months to be ISO certified. But we, in the [Center for Health Development 3], are targeting the certification for just seven months,” Regional Director Leonita Gorgolon stated.
Taking part on the journey for ISO certification, the CHD 3 conducted series of orientations and trainings for all the employees, from the security personnel to the regional director.
These activities aim to make sure that all employees understand well why the whole DOH, not only the CHD 3, need to institutionalize a Quality Management System (QMS) certifiable to ISO 9001:2008.
The regional director, as the Quality Management Representative (QMR), recognizes the value of being ISO certified, stating that it is to ensure global competitiveness, gain the citizen’s trust and confidence and align the department’s vision with the current thrust of the national government on good governance and anti-corruption.
Some significant benefits of being ISO certified would be better image of the DOH, improved planning and performance review, improved communication, clearly defined interface among offices and fact-based decisions.
These will all be possible through the eight QMS principles necessary for the organization to have an effective and efficient system, developed by the ISO technical committee 176.
The principles are client focus, leadership, involvement of people, process approach, system approach, continual improvement, factual approach to decision making and mutually beneficial supplier relationship.
The DOH is considered to be the first government agency to have a department-wide ISO QMS certification and is now regarded to be the biggest organization eying for the ISO certification.
ISO is a non-governmental organization and the world’s largest developer and publisher of international standards on good quality management practices. ISO 9001:2008 is a model created by the ISO for setting up a valuable and applicable QMS and standards for ensuring quality services, environmental friendliness, safety, reliability, efficiency and interchangeability. ●
