Blood donation drive launched anew
December 2, 2010
STA. RITA –The Philippine National Red Cross-Angeles City Chapter and the Municipal Government here launched a series of blood donation drives in bid to promote the awareness of the importance of donating blood and its other health benefits.
Red Cross Angeles City Chapter head Augusto Ocampo and Mayor Yolanda “Yolly” Pineda led the bloodletting activity Thursday morning at the town plaza here. Some 26 municipal employees and local residents participated in the event.
Pineda said the Municipal Government is supporting the Red Cross blood bank drive, adding that the activity promotes the spirit of helping others in need. She said blood that is donated to the blood bank can save those in need of blood transfusion.
“Giving blood is a way of giving a part of a person’s life to others. We are always in support of this kind of activity and we are assuring the Red Cross of our continuous support,” Pineda said.
Ocampo, for his part, also emphasized that donating a blood is a very simple procedure that will take a few minutes, and at the same time blood donation will give health benefits on the part of the donor.
“Our bone marrow will be stimulated to produce new and active cells which in turn make the blood forming organs function more effectively. We will know our blood type, hemoglobin and blood pressure. More volunteer blood donors would meet the supply of blood. And it is something that will make us feel good about ourselves,” Ocampo said.
Ocampo assured that donors undergo strict screening and interview to ensure that only fit and healthy people will qualify for the blood donation. Ocampo said the blood donated to the Red Cross would still undergo machine screening to ensure safety.
Individuals with communicable diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis and HIV are not allowed to donate blood for such diseases may cause hazard to the blood recipient.
