Bacolor farmers need irrigation

BACOLOR — Some 20 years after Mt. Pinatubo ashes covered rice fields of this town, farmer Rudy Granda went back to his hometown to plant again.
“The sulfur content of the land has evaporated. Bacolor land was fertile again so we started planting,” Granda said.
When Mt. Pinatubo erupted in 1991, Granda and his family had to leave their farmland and live in a resettlement area in Barangay Pandacaqui in Mexico town.
“Life there was different. We had no good means of livelihood since we’re really into farming but we can’t even plant there,” Granda said.
Now that rice fields are viable for planting again, Granda said, more resettled Bacolor natives will go back to their hometown.
Nestor Pineda, municipal agriculturist, said palay (rice), sugarcane, sweet potatoes and other crops grow well in Bacolor lands since they started planting again.
“In one hectare, farmers can harvest around 70 sacks of palay every year,” Pineda said.
Pineda said farmers could harvest two to three times a year with around 90 to 100 sacks of rice per hectare if only there was enough water supply.
“Our farmers need irrigation,” Pineda said.
To address the farmers’ need, Mayor Jose Maria Hizon has sought the help of the National Irrigation Administration in Central Luzon, which resulted to the creation of the Bacolor Communal Irrigation project (CIP).
The proposed Bacolor CIP is located in Barangay San Antonio and is expected to provide water source to villages of San Antonio, Sta. Barbara, Parulog, Cabetican, Tinajero, San Vicente and Sta. Ines.
A total of 556 hectares of land and 262 farmers will benefit from the proposed water supply.
Angelito Miguel, division manager of the NIA Pampanga-Bataan Irrigation Management office, said the proposal was drafted in 2008 and was only given budget by the National Government recently.
Miguel said the total budget for the Bacolor irrigation system is P100 million, which includes programmed works such as diversion works, canalization, canal structure and construction survey.
“We will start constructing the irrigation system on January and commit to finish it 90 days after,” Miguel said.
In a consultation meeting on Friday at the Bacolor town hall, local farmers have expressed their support in the project.
“This irrigation system will bring back Bacolor town’s rich economy,” one farmer said.
During the consultation meeting, Vice Mayor Ananias Canlas Jr., NIA regional director Reynaldo Puno and NIA Engineering and Operations Manager Marcelino Santos were also present.
