AT LEAST 15,066 employees with an estimated total compensation of more than P1.4 billion depend on the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in Cebu.
A report presented to the Regional Development Council said these figures come from Cebu’s Asiatown IT Park alone.
Central Visayas, through its robust information and communications technology (ICT) and BPO industry, helped the country overtake India as the BPO capital of the world, the report said.
From January to June 2010, a number of BPO companies in Region 7 expanded operations, including People Support, Epson, Teletech, Convergys, Qualfon and Exist Global.
There were also new companies that joined Cebu’s ICT/BPO industry during the period.
IBM Philippines opened a global delivery center (GDC) for application services in Cebu. JP Morgan Chase and Co. also opened a facility at the Asiatown IT Park, while the Thakral Group of Singapore started operating a facility in Cebu that will address the IT needs of businesses in Cebu and its neighboring provinces.
Marlene Rodriguez, director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 7, said that data from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) show that as of May 2010, there were 19 IT parks and centers operating in Central Visayas with a total of 91 locators.
There are over 44 call centers operating in Central Visayas.
Rodriguez presided over the RDC meeting last Dec. 9.
Tourism
Meanwhile, the RDC data gathered on tourism suggest that the industry has started to recover after being hit by the international financial crisis in 2009.
In the first six months of 2010, the RDC reported the number of foreign and local
visitors (mostly tourists), increased by 4.45 percent.
“Industry players attribute the growth of the tourism industry in the fist half of 2010 to the improvement of cash positions, particularly of business travelers,” the RDC report stated.
After implementing cost reduction measures at the height of the economic crisis in 2008 and 2009, companies are now in a better position to spend for business trips, it pointed out.
Continued expansion of the industry was also a result of the promotional efforts pursued by industry players, like discounted rates.
