Accused rapist-professor nabbed in Jeddah
December 02, 2010
ANGELES CITY, Pampanga, Philippines—Authorities in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia have arrested there last Friday a dismissed university professor who has eluded five arrest warrants last year in connection with 32 counts of rape and child abuse of a minor here.
The accused, Arnel Atienza Ocampo, is now in the custody of Jeddah officials and awaiting deportation, according to the father of the victim, citing reports confirmed by Justice Secretary Leila De Lima and National Bureau of Investigation Interpol chief Claro De Castro.
Reached on Thursday morning, De Castro said he was still awaiting official communication about the arrest.
Ocampo’s family could not be reached for comments. He has reportedly taken his wife and two children to Jeddah.
Of five arrest warrants issued by a regional trial court, two were not allowed bail.
Because of this, Ocampo, 50, can be arrested and jailed once he reaches the country.
The arrest came after viewers of The Filipino Channel watching Failon Ngayon provided tips on the whereabouts of the accused. The program featured the story of the victim on August 20. The Department of Foreign Affairs acted on the tips, said the father.
Ocampo was found in an office of a construction company where he works as a secretary.
He left the country last May 28, 2009 despite a hold departure order and after a preliminary hearing at the Department of Justice. The arrest warrants were out in November last year. The Interpol put him on red notice list last January while the DFA canceled his passport last April 28.
The Holy Angel University here dismissed him in March 2009. The girl, 16 years old by then, was in first year college. The Gabriela party-list group, which aided her in the case, calls her “Angel.”
“Though long overdue, we are happy that initial victory in our campaign for Angel has been met in the arrest of her rapist,” Gabriela party-list Representative Emy De Jesus told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
“We salute the courage and effort of Angel and her family for their tireless work in pursuing the case,” De Jesus added.
The father said her daughter was “ready to fight and put Ocampo behind bars for the rest of his life.”
“She’s ready to fight for the sake of justice to all the victims,” he said, referring to girls supposedly similarly abused in two other schools in Pampanga.
