Broadcaster gets threat

AFTER the slay attempt of Michael James Licuanan of Bombo Radyo in November last year, another broadcaster admitted having “indirectly threatened” by the political officer of a government official.
Jeoffrey E. Baconga, acting chief of reporters of Bombo Radyo who currently handles Licuanan’s “Zona Libre” program, said the political officer, whom he knows but refused to divulge the name, asked him to board his car and warned him against discussing “a government issue” in his radio program.
“He told me not to get involved and discuss the issue thoroughly so that I would not be the next James Dacoycoy,” Baconga said.
Licuanan, the chief of reporters of Bombo Radyo who is known as James Dacoycoy, was shot on November 24, 2011 while on his way home from work.
Police eyed drug-related issues that Licuanan discussed in his radio program as the possible motive of the slay attempt.
Baconga said the political officer reportedly showed off his firearm to him.
However, he said he is not cowed by the incident and vowed to continue to tackle the issue on air because it reportedly involves money.
“I still have to get more evidence about that because I know that P50 million is involved on this and such money was ‘gone with the wind,’” Baconga said.
He said he refused to report the incident to police since he did not take it personally, citing this as an example of media harassment.
Baconga said he will personally investigate the issue and divulge it to higher authorities if he can get all necessary documents.
“This has been our promise, that I and my colleagues have given to the people, that we will serve the people no matter what the criminals would think about us or do to us,” he said.
