Lawmaker allots P1M for ‘Sendong’ victims

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales (3rd district, Pampanga) has committed part of his salary and some P1 million from his priority development assistance fund (PDAF) for areas devastated by Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi).
This came as Gonzales heeded the call of Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. who earlier urged his House colleagues to earmark at least P1 million out of their PDAF for areas devastated by the recent storm that battered parts of Mindanao.
Belmonte and two other lawmakers earlier filed a resolution taking P20,000 each from the monthly salaries of the 285 House members to provide relief to the “Sendong” victims.
The P1-million commitment for infrastructure rehabilitation, meanwhile, is voluntary.
Belmonte earlier expressed hope that majority of his colleagues will heed to his call.
Gonzales said he has also committed part of his salary along with items like canned goods and other personal necessities to be donated to the victims of the typhoon.
“The fund that we intend to donate is just small compared to the damaged brought about by the typhoon. However, with our concerted efforts and those of private sector and the National Government, I am optimistic that we can assist more people in Mindanao,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales, however, was quick to add that this will not deprive his constituents in the third district of the usual services that he gives them through his social and health programs.
“We will continuously fund our programs in infra, health, education and our other programs. This donation is a humanitarian gesture from a lawmaker who sees the need to help those in need even if they are not our constituents,” Gonzales said.
Each lawmaker is entitled to a yearly PDAF amount of P70 million, more than half of which is allocated to hard projects or the construction and repair of roads and bridges.
Gonzales also urged the private sector in the province to pool in their resources to help the people affected by the recent typhoon. He said each Filipino should respond to the call of President Benigno Aquino III to help the people in Mindanao.
Initial reports showed that the recent typhoon destroyed 87 metric tons of palay (rice) worth P6.1 million mostly in Palawan, and 189 MT of corn worth P4.5 million mostly in Zamboanga del Norte and Northern Mindanao.
Some P4.78 million worth of vegetables, fruits and root crops in Northern Mindanao were also damaged by “Sendong”.
As of the latest report of the National Risk Reduction and Management Council on Friday, “Sendong” left 1,080 dead. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
