DSWD gets funds to buy noche buena packages for Sendong victims

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 gave more than 11,000 noche buena (Christmas eve) food packs to victims of tropical storm Sendong in Negros Oriental.
Meanwhile, Capitol beat reporters raised P14,080 for typhoon victims during their Christmas party last Thursday.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who hosted the party, thanked news reporters and guests for the donation.
She said she will match the amount, using her December 2011 salary.
Since typhoon victims lack access to potable water, the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) will lend two water trucks to its counterpart in Cagayan de Oro.

Armando Paredes, MCWD general manager, said they offered to help when they learned that the Cagayan de Oro Water District’s distribution system got destroyed in the typhoon.
At the DSWD 7, information officer Jaybee Carillo said typhoon victims in Negros Oriental got food packs worth P480 each.
Each package contains spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, cheese, canned goods, candies and biscuits.
Carillo said assistance to typhoon victims amounted to a total of P9.8 million, which includes donations from local government units and non-government organizations.
Governor Garcia, on the other hand, will go to Cagayan de Oro next week to bring heavy equipment and Provincial Government personnel who will help clean up typhoon-ravaged areas in Mindanao.
Reporters, who will cover the visit, will bring the funds they raised during the Christmas party and turn this over to concerned local government officials in Cagayan de Oro City.
Asturias Mayor Allan Adlawan, one of the guests in the party, pledged P100,000 to each of the Mindanao cities—Cagayan de Oro and Iligan—that were hit by Sendong.
Gregg Rubio, president of the Capitol Association of Reporters in Tri-media, said the donation is the reporters’ way of expressing sympathy to typhoon victims.
The MCWD trucks will be in Cagayan de Oro for a week and will be used to deliver water to parched areas.
Paredes said MCWD will shoulder fuel expenses of the trucks, and will provide personnel to drive the trucks and deliver water.
He said the Cagayan water district’s capacity is down almost 20 percent and it would be some time before its distribution system is repaired.
ATS Consolidated Inc., operator of Superferry and Cebu Ferries vessels, offered free transportation for MCWD water trucks.
Paredes assured that MCWD still has two trucks that will serve its franchise area in Cebu.
