San Simon posts 123% increase in tax collections

SAN SIMON — Even after the massive damages wrought by typhoons on this town, the Municipal Government was able to post a 123 percent in tax collection nearing year-end.
Mayor Leonora Wong said the two-fold increase was a result of the proper and streamlined implementation of its Tax and Revenue Code.
“In year 2010 our collection was just P65 million. But having properly implemented our Tax and Revenue Codes, were able to increase that to P106 million as of the fourth quarter of this year. We made the projection early this year and achieved it because we are now fully computerized much that securing permits could be done online via the internet in a matter of 25 minutes,” Wong said.
Since the past year, she added, her administration has been focusing on the three-point agenda of social, environmental and economic programs.
“Five big investors came into San Simon and one of them located in a 200-hectare area at our economic zone. It is a good sign that we are on the right track because even crime rate here has been very low. The investments coming in have been generating a lot of livelihood and employment opportunities for Simonians,” she said.
The lady mayor added that after putting the necessary infrastructure in place, the Municipal Government would set its sight on food production and sufficiency.
“We are constructing about 250 meter roads in the 14 barangays of San Simon. We have also started planting hybrid rice and vegetables in a 5-hectare demonstration farm in Concepcion where we expect a yield of 150 percent. Hopefully, we could also provide post harvest facilities through funding from taxes collected so they will work for and be given back to the people of San Simon in terms of services and programs. Simonians are very resilient and could bounce back from any disaster or calamity. They have been very cooperative in paying their taxes and we will definitely translate these into benefits for them,” said Wong. (Jovi T. De Leon)
