Mayor asks LTO: Curb overloading trucks

APALIT — Mayor Oscar Tetangco Jr., has asked local officials of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to monitor and control overloaded trucks that have destroyed major roads of this town.
“We appeal to the LTO to put personnel to monitor the operations of these overloaded trucks or at least deputize us to monitor them,” Tetangco said.
Tetangco said national roads could only handle 14 tons but overloaded trucks from Bulacan and Nueva Ecija load as much as 20 to 25 tons.
Tetangco added that the approach of the P250-million Sulipan Bridge has been badly damaged, as well as the Minalin road going to his town.
Earlier, the Colgante Bridge was also destroyed due to the frequent passing of overloaded trucks.
Broken roads, Tetangco said, have badly affected the travel time of native residents and have even caused accidents.
“Most importantly, broken roads will shy away investors. How can we attract more investors if our roads are broken?” Tetangco asked.
He said the Provincial Government has extended help in repairing their roads. However, local officials still cannot deputize them to monitor overloaded trucks.
“It’s only the LTO that can deputize people. If they don’t have enough men to do it, I offer my people to monitor these overloaded trucks that usually operate during night time,” Tetangco said.
Only this year, Apalit was first to receive an award for strictly implementing anti-overloading laws when LTO gave native residents permission to monitor the operations of overloaded trucks.
