‘Sendong’ slows down

MANILA (Updated 7:25 a.m.) — State weather forecasters said Tropical Storm Sendong (international codename: Washi) has slowed down slightly as it continues to threaten northeastern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas area.
At 4 a.m. Friday, the center of Sendong was estimated at 300 kilometers east southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) raised public storm signal number 2 in Leyte Provinces, Camotes Island and Bohol in the Visayas; and Surigao Del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao Del Sur, Dinagat Province, Agusan Provinces, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Samal Island and Davao Oriental in Mindanao.
Placed under public storm signal number 1 are Sorsogon, Ticao Island and Masbate in Luzon; Samar Provinces, Biliran Island, Panay Island, Guimaras, Negros Provinces, Cebu and Siquijor Island in the Visayas; and North Cotabato, Northern Davao Del Sur, Lanao Provinces, Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga Provinces in Mindanao.
Sendong is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness up to 80 kph.
It is moving west northwest at 24 kph and is expected to be at 120 kilometers east southeast of Dumaguete City by Saturday morning and at 40 kilometers east of Puerto Princesa City by Sunday morning.
The storm is expected to dump heavy rains of between 10 and 25 millimeters per hour within the 400-kilometer diameter.
Sendong is set to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Sunday evening or Monday morning over the West Philippine Sea.
Sendong, whose international codename is the Japanese term for eagle, will likewise enhance the northeast monsoon or amihan, making sea travel off limits over the seaboards of Luzon and Western Visayas. (Sunnex)
