Palace wants ‘to control SC’
Thursday, December 15, 2011
A MALACAÑANG official yesterday said it would be better for Chief Justice Renato Corona to go on leave while he faces an impeachment trial at the Senate.
But if Palace officials thought Corona would agree to lie low, the chief justice proved them wrong yesterday, when he accused President Benigno Aquino III of trying to establish a dictatorship.
An unconfirmed number of trial courts across the country suspended work yesterday to express support for the impeached chief justice, who delivered his most strongly-worded rebuttal so far against the president.
Corona said his impeachment is part of Malacañang’s attempt to gain full control of the judiciary and the rest of government.
“Ito ang patutunguhan ng baluktot na daang matuwid. Matagal na po akong nagtitimpi.
Hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit nanggigil ang Pangulo sa akin (This is what results from a crooked path that misrepresents itself as the straight and narrow. I have restrained myself for a long time. I do not understand why the President seems out to get rid of me),” he said.
Corona was impeached Monday night, after 188 of the 287 members of the House of Representatives signed the impeachment complaint against him for culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and betrayal of public trust, among others.
“Itong impeachment ay dala ng kasakiman na magkaroon ng isang Korte Suprema na kayang diktahan, na nakukuha sa tingin, at magkakandarapang ipatupad ang kanilang bawat hiling (The impeachment is motivated by greed, by their wish to have a Supreme Court they can dictate to, that will bend over backwards to do their every bidding),” the chief justice said.
Black
The Senate convened yesterday as the impeachment court and is expected to begin the trial early next year.
In a text message, Manila Regional Trial Court Judges Association president Antonio Eugenio said yesterday: “A court holiday is declared in solidarity with Corona, who will be addressing the nation regarding the impeachment complaint filed against him.
All judges and court personnel are therefore expected to suspend court sessions and office work on the whole day. Wear black.”
In Cebu, the testimony of accused drug trafficker Asha Atieno Oguto was postponed yesterday, as a side effect of the impeachment controversy.
Lawyer Rico Amores said that no court order or memo was issued, but the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 27 observed a court holiday.
Despite the postponement, Amores said that had no effect on his client Oguto’s case.
The proceedings will continue today. The Kenyan national is expected to testify.
Malacañang criticized the court holiday, calling it “another example of how justice can be subverted to further the interest of one.”
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a statement, said: “We call on Chief Justice Corona, should he deny that a court holiday has been declared, to order them back to work and let not slow to a grinding halt the wheels of justice. We call on members of the judiciary to not let themselves be used to further the political agenda of one man and his patron.”
Bullying
Corona, in his speech, said he was baffled by the President’s desire to remove him from office.
“Recently, I was openly criticized in public. But as a Christian from Batangas, I decided to keep my cool and just let it pass. I haven’t done anything wrong to you, Mr. President. I haven’t done anything wrong to the public,” Corona said.
He added that President Aquino should have paid more attention to the economy, job creation, and hunger.
“I want you to know that I am against the continuous bullying and threats (by the executive department). I am opposed to the plan of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to build a dictatorship,” Corona told some 500 black-clad supporters, who assembled outside the Supreme Court.
In Cebu City, some students and instructors of the University of San Carlos (USC) College of Law said the impeachment is a good sign that the judicial system in the country still works.
USC law professor Joan Largo said it shows that the country still respects the rule of law, rather than taking their concerns into the streets.
‘Dismantle’
RJ Martinez, USC Lex Circle president, said that as a law student, he finds the proceedings against the chief justice are a good sign the people still trust the judiciary.
He urged the public to be vigilant.
A signature campaign reportedly circulated among students of the university, calling for the chief justice’s resignation, but its officials could not confirm that particular report.
Presidential spokesman Lacierda said that Chief Justice Corona’s speech was “full of lies”.
He “has no right to identify or accuse President Aquino of (building a) dictatorship” because the Aquino family was also a victim of the dictatorship during the Martial law years.
“What we are doing right now under the Aquino administration is trying to dismantle the Arroyo apparatus of trying to protect her from accountability,” Lacierda said. (Sunnex)/With JKV & CDG
