Palace: Aquino’s anti-SC tirade has nothing to do with Luisita

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino’s recent tirades against the Supreme Court has nothing to do with the latter’s decision that ordered the distribution of landholdings owned by the family of his mother, a Malacanang official said Thursday.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda dismissed the claims of worker’s group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) that said that the President is using former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to get back at the High Court. The labor group said that President Benigno Aquino III was irked by the SC’s decision ordering his relatives to distribute more than 5,000 hectares of land to farmer-beneficiaries of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac.
“That is a complete disinformation,” Lacierda said at a press briefing in Malacanang.
He said KMU’s observation was completely incorrect because the government was even included in those organizations that filed a motion for reconsideration when the SC first ruled in favor of stock distribution option (SDO) agreement that gave farmers the choice between owning shares of stock in HLI or land in the sugar estate.
“Let’s not forget that the Department of Agrarian Reform through the Office of the Solicitor General also filed a motion for reconsideration on that point. So it is not right to say that the President got mad about the ruling,” the Palace official said.
He said that if the President was upset about the decision, the DA could have filed another motion to reverse the November 24 ruling of the SC ordering the Cojuangcos to distribute the Hacienda Luisita to some 6,000 farmer-beneficiaries.
Lacierda emphasized that the administration respects the recent ruling of the high court.
KMU chairman Elmer Labog criticized President Aquino for issuing strong statements against the high court noting that the latter’s “real objective” is the reversal of the Hacienda case ruling.
Labog said Aquino is “desperate” to recover the land for his relatives.
President Aquino, over the past weeks, has been expressing his sentiments over the apparent “questionable decisions” made by the SC ruled by Chief Justice Renato Corona.
He personally scored Corona at a forum citing the latter’s alleged partiality in treating the issues concerning former President Arroyo, who appointed him at the SC’s highest post.
Lacierda said the only time the President decided to question the SC was when it issued an order restraining the Department of Justice from requiring Arroyo to seek government permission before leaving the country.
