Bill seeks to name Philippines’ busiest road after Aquino’s mother
THE Philippines’ busiest thoroughfare may soon be named after global democracy icon and late President Corazon Aquino, mother of President Benigno Aquino III.
That is, if a bill pending before the House Committee on Public Works and Highways is passed into law.
Last month, Bohol Representative Rene Relampagos filed House Bill 5422 to rename Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) – one of the country’s longest highways – after the late President.
However, this early, some lawmakers have already opposed the measure.
“It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, a woman of courage and valor, that Edsa – an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy, be named after her,” Relampagos stated.
Corazon Aquino was catapulted into the presidency in 1986 after an uprising on Edsa help oust the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
“One cannot think of the 1986 Edsa Revolution without thinking of Corazon Aquino. Even after her term as President of the Republic, she lived her life fighting for democracy, as she goes out of her way to fight for justice and truth, for peace and democracy,” Relampagos said.
However, Bayan Muna party-list Representative Teddy Casino, who has earlier filed his own version of an “anti-epal” bill at the House of Representatives, called Relampagos’ measure a “mega epal” bill.
Casino and fellow Bayan Muna Representative Neri Colmenares have filed House Bill 2309, which prohibits the naming of public properties and government services after incumbent elected public officials, their kin, spouses, and relatives of up to the fourth civil degree of consanguinity.
The measure is still pending before the House Committee on Revision of Laws.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman hit the filing of the measure and said that the highway near the Hacienda Luisita — owned by the late President’s family — should be the one named after her.
The case of the Cojuangco-owned Hacienda Luisita was set to have been ruled upon with finality by the Supreme Court Tuesday but was deferred because some justices have not submitted their opinions on time.
Reports said majority of the High Tribunal justices will vote for the distribution of the 6,000-hectare sugar plantation to the farmer-beneficiaries. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
