House majority supports Aquino’s ‘good governance’
LESS than half of members of the House of Representatives have signified support to President Benigno Aquino III despite criticisms that the government railroaded the proceedings of the electoral sabotage case against his predecessor.
Among the 120 signatories of House Resolution 1918 include House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. (Liberal Party); Deputy Speakers Arnulfo Fuentebella (Nationalist People’s Coalition), Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla (Nacionalista Party), Pablo Garcia (National Unity Party), and Lorenzo “Erin” Tanada III (LP); and Majority Leader Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales II (LP).
The House resolution was to express support to Aquino in “upholding the tenets of good governance and public accountability.”
“President Aquino has committed himself to transformational leadership through his social contract with the Filipino people…Whereas, contemporaneous events have shown that President Aquino has been consistent in his zeal to weed out corruption, inefficiency, and abuse of power in all branches of government,” the resolution stated.
Belmonte said the House leadership expects the number of signatories to reach 200. There are 285 members at the House of Representatives.
The resolution was filed Monday night, after the minority bloc earlier said they are studying the possibility of filing of an impeachment case against President Aquino.
A draft released to the media last week, however, shows that the resolution to be filed was to express the LP’s support to President Aquino and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima after it barred former President and Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from leaving the country.
Earlier, Immigration officials prevented Arroyo and her husband, former First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, from flying out of the country despite a temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court on the watchlist order against them.
An LP lawmaker said the draft resolution was “to assure that we are behind the political decision of the President to stop Arroyo’s flight”.
“The draft was premised on the issue of the TRO so everything there was directed on the TRO and that has become a part of history,” Belmonte explained. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
