Labor office, Dagupan to launch emergency job program

DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan — The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) and the City Government have again partnered in an emergency employment program that will give jobs to 75 working-age male indigents for 20 days.
To qualify, the temporary employees should be residents of the city’s coastal barangays, especially those hardest-hit by the onslaught of recent typhoons and by what the locals call gawat (hard times.)
Recipients identified by the City Employment Service Office (Ceso) are those who have not been allowed to work under earlier cash-for-work schemes implemented in the city.
Tasks assigned to workers involve tree-planting along the riverbanks of sitio Russia in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, river clean-up, and the dismantling of illegal fishing structures.
Esteros to be cleaned would be determined by the City Engineers’ Office (CEO).
Compensation of the workers will be shared by the City Government and Dole. Forty percent of the project’s total budget will be covered by the city which will cover materials and equipment used by the beneficiaries. Dole will shoulder the compensation of the participants.
Beneficiaries’ daily pay under the program is pegged at P248. The whole 20-day compensation is equivalent to P4,960, which will be given during the culmination of the program on December 5 this year. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)
