Soju was first developed in Korea somewhere during the Gorye period (918-1392) and the Won Dynasty of China. It actually was a derivative of a beverage known as “Sul” passed from Arabia to the Mongols and then to Manchuria and finally to Korea . It was original prepared for Royalty and high occasions. During the Korean Koryo Dynasty (1300’s), soju first took on its unique taste, standards and flavor that are still recognizable today.

Nowadays, Soju is the choice of a nation and has rapidly become the choice of the world. Surprising at it may seem soju is the top selling spirit worldwide, surpassing even vodka. Soju is a communal beverage and is consumed as commonly as beer in the United States . It is considered appropriate for both business and recreational purposes in order to enhance relationship building and bonding. Koreans place greater value in relationships than virtually anything else and for centuries soju has been front and center as a medium to develop these ties.

Soju is lower in alcoholic content than most spirits and this is not coincidence as one of the major reasons for its popularity. It is a distilled beverage and any residual effects are considered to be less than those of the fermented variety. Beyond the numerous health benefits, the lower alcohol also provides people with confidence that its consumption will serve as a mood enhancer without passing limits of decorum. Soju’s flavor does vary as it is distilled from various raw materials. The sweetest, smoothest tasting and highest quality soju is widely recognized as coming from sweet potatoes. Rice is also used as is wheat and barely.

The alcohol content ranges but generally stays at 22-24% for highest quality imported varieties. The flavor of soju can vary but when it is made with sweet potatoes it is generally slightly sweet with a mildly sweet scent.

Ku Soju is distilled with the knowledge passed on though hundreds of generations. Distilled from sweet potatoes, Ku Soju proudly takes its place as the finest quality soju in the world and dutifully carries more than 1000 years of tradition into the next millennium of happy social gatherings. When nothing but the best will do, it Ku for you!
