2 Kapampangans named PH outstanding young men
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Two Kapampangans were among the seven individuals recently chosen and awarded by President Benigno Aquino III as “The Outstanding Young Men” (TOYM) of 2012.
The two Kapampangan men, Ivan Anthony Henares from this city and Allan “apl.de.ap” Lindo Pineda from Angeles City, received their award from Mr. Aquino during a ceremony at the Malacanan Palace on Wednesday.
Henares was chosen for his contributions in heritage conservation while Pineda for contemporary music.
In his speech, Mr. Aquino said Henares “has given a new generation of people an appreciation of our heritage.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Aquino described Pineda as his “friend” who gives back to his fellow Filipinos aside from entertaining them.
“We have an international hip-hop phenomenon, who found his initial success by reminding each of us to ‘practice what we preach’ — a person I am fortunate to call friend, who I often see in awarding ceremonies and events because he doesn’t just entertain his countrymen, he gives back to them, especially in times of great challenge: In apl.de.ap, we see all of these things,” Mr. Aquino said.
Pineda, along with his fellow awardees, even staged a performance during the awarding ceremonies.
“To our awardees: The best of your work is still to come. You are going to be a vital part of our nation’s future,” Mr. Aquino told all seven awardees.
Aside from Henares and Pineda, other awardees include Democratic Independent Workers’ Association party-list Representative Emmeline Aglipay for public service; Warren Baticados for veterinary medicine; the Azkals’ Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong for sports; Abelardo David for community occupational rehabilitation and Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad Jr. for broadcast journalism.
Profiles
Henares, this city’s former tourism officer, is a well-known heritage advocate.
He has explored the Philippines’ 7,107 islands and has visited the country’s 80 provinces.
Also an educator of tourism at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Henares sits as the vice president of the Heritage Conservation Society and the Philippine representative to ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC).
Henares was named “Most Outstanding Kapampangan for Youth Leadership” in 2001.
On the other hand, Pineda is well-known for being a member of the international singing group “Black Eyed Peas.”
Pineda hails from Barangay Sapang Bato, a known Aeta community in Angeles City.
Pineda has brought his Filipino culture into his singing group by writing the song “The Apl Song” in 2003. The song explained his life history.
Judges
The TOYM awardees were chosen by the board of judges chaired by Supreme Court Justice Arturo Brion.
Aside from Brion, judges also include Bank of the Philippine Islands president and Chief Executive Office Aurelio Montinola III, Bro. Ricardo Laguda of the De La Salle University, PBA Commissioner Chito Salud, Miguel Belmonte, president and CEO of The STAR, Raul Sunico of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Agnes Mejia, dean of the UP College of Medicine.
TOYM is one of the country’s most prestigious awards for young men and women aged 18 to 40 whose selfless dedication to their profession has resulted in significant contributions to the welfare of their countrymen as well as to the advancement of their fields of endeavor. ●Charlene Cayabyab
